Showcase

Showcase was a catch-all comic book from DC where new projects were often tested before getting their own titles...or, if sales were lax, not. Much of the year '66 for SHOWCASE was taken up by Murphy Anderson and Gardner Fox's cosmic revival of Jerry Siegel's THE SPECTRE (mercifully minus his sidekick from the '40s, Percival Popp the Super Cop!) and Joe Orlando's INFERIOR FIVE. Both of those features eventually graduated to their own book...which is more than can be said for B'wana Beast who rounded out the year.

The Ugly Dachshund and the Honey Tree

THE UGLY DACHSHUND was the second of many Disney films to feature Dean Jones as leading man, here opposite the always sexy--even in a Disney flick--Suzanne Pleshette. Perhaps more interesting, though, is that the opening featurette with this film was WINNIE THE POOH AND THE HONEY TREE the first Disney appearance of the Milne characters and the only one Walt himself had anything to do with.

The Comic Reader

Comic books really came into their own in 1966 as the success of TV's BATMAN allowed them to get noticed in a positive light after the purge of the previous decade. Simultaneously, comic book fandom was coming into its own with scores of fan publications including THE COMIC READER.
